The F-35A Lightning II, a fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter, is a pivotal component of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF). Norway joined the F-35 programme in 2008, seeking to modernise its air capabilities with advanced technology and interoperability with NATO allies. The F-35A, known for its stealth features, advanced avionics, and versatile combat capabilities, is designed for air superiority, ground attack, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. 

Norway received its first F-35A in 2017, and by 2021, the RNoAF had declared initial operational capability, marking a significant milestone in its defense strategy. The F-35A replaces the aging F-16 fleet, providing enhanced performance, survivability, and a broader range of missions. Stationed at Ørland Main Air Station and Evenes Air Station, the F-35A plays a crucial role in maintaining Norway's sovereignty, particularly in the strategically important Arctic region. Its integration into the RNoAF underscores Norway's commitment to maintaining a modern, effective defense force.
