History.
The Dassault Rafale first flew on 4 July 1986, when the Rafale A demonstrator took to the skies from Istres, marking a major milestone in French aviation. Developed by Dassault Aviation as an omnirole fighter, the aircraft was designed to replace several ageing types in both the French Air Force and Navy. Over the following decades, the Rafale evolved into a highly capable multirole jet, performing air superiority, strike, reconnaissance and nuclear deterrence missions. Entering service in 2001, it has since seen combat in Afghanistan, Libya and the Sahel. The 40th anniversary of its first flight celebrates four decades of technological innovation, operational success and France’s commitment to independent defence capability.
