History.

On June 6, 1944, Church Sainte-Mère-Église stood witness to one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. Nestled in the heart of Normandy, France, this quaint village became a focal point during the Allied invasion, famously known as D-Day.

As the first paratroopers descended from the night sky, the fate of the war hung in the balance. Among them was John Steele, whose parachute snagged on the church's steeple, leaving him dangling precariously above the ground. Despite being wounded and captured, Steele's ordeal became emblematic of the bravery and sacrifice of the Allied forces.

Throughout the early hours of June 6th, the church bore witness to intense fighting as American and German forces clashed in the streets below. Its sturdy stone walls provided shelter to both defenders and wounded soldiers seeking refuge from the chaos outside.

The liberation of Sainte-Mère-Église marked a significant turning point in the war, as the Allies established a crucial foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe. The church, once a silent observer of centuries past, became a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of tyranny.

Today, visitors to Sainte-Mère-Église can still see the preserved parachute and effigy of John Steele hanging from the church steeple, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made on that fateful day. Church Sainte-Mère-Église stands not only as a place of worship but also as a living testament to the courage and determination of those who fought for freedom.
