History.
The Dornier Do 17Z-2, a variant of the German Dornier Do 17, was an iconic light bomber during World War II. Nicknamed the "Flying Pencil" due to its sleek, narrow fuselage, the Do 17Z-2 was developed in the late 1930s and saw extensive use during the early years of the war. It was powered by two Bramo 323 radial engines, which provided a top speed of 255 mph and a range of 745 miles. The bomber was equipped with a defensive armament of up to six machine guns and could carry a bomb load of 2,200 pounds.
The Do 17Z-2 played a crucial role in various campaigns, including the Battle of Britain, where it performed bombing raids and reconnaissance missions. Despite its early success, the Do 17Z-2 was gradually phased out in favour of more advanced aircraft as the war progressed. Nevertheless, it remains a symbol of early Luftwaffe air power.
