History.

The Vickers A1E1 Independent was a British experimental tank developed in the 1920s. Designed to explore the potential of multi-turreted tanks, it featured a unique configuration with a central main turret housing a 3-pounder gun, supported by four smaller turrets with machine guns. This made it one of the most distinctive tanks of its era.

The A1E1 was conceived to serve as a breakthrough tank, capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously. Built by Vickers-Armstrong, it was heavily armoured for its time, weighing approximately 32 tonnes. However, its complex design and high production costs limited its viability, and only one prototype was produced.

While the A1E1 never entered service, it influenced tank designs in other nations, particularly the Soviet Union’s T-35. Today, the sole surviving A1E1 is preserved at The Tank Museum in Bovington, serving as a testament to interwar tank innovation.
