History.
The USS Arizona (BB-39) was a Pennsylvania-class battleship commissioned by the United States Navy in 1916. Named in honour of the 48th state, it was constructed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and represented one of the most powerful naval vessels of its time. The Arizona saw limited action during World War I, primarily serving as a training ship for gunnery crews. However, its most significant historical moment came on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. A bomb detonated the forward ammunition magazine, causing a massive explosion that sank the ship and resulted in the deaths of 1,177 officers and crewmen. The loss of the USS Arizona became a symbol of American sacrifice and galvanised the nation's entry into World War II. Today, the wreckage of the Arizona rests at the bottom of Pearl Harbour, preserved as a national memorial and a poignant reminder of the tragic events of that day.
