History.
Among the most modern submarines in the Allied fleets at the outbreak of World War II, two Polish Orzeł class vessels (four were intended), ORP Orzeł (Eagle) and ORP Sęp (Vulture), were built in Dutch shipyards for the Navy in the 1930s. With an entirely welded hull, all controls hydraulically operated and a speed of 19.5 knots, the craft was intended to fulfil the Polish requirements for a multi-purpose vessel, to be deployed in the shallow Baltic as well as the high seas. Soon after the outbreak of war, the two submarines were ordered to British ports and Orzel sunk two german troop transports in April 1940. However, in what remains a mystery to this day, ORP Orzeł was lost with all hands whilst on patrol in the North Sea. As well as torpedo tubes, Orzeł was armed with a 4" deck gun.
