History.

The MiG-17, a Soviet-designed fighter jet, became one of the most recognisable aircraft of the Cold War, serving in over 40 air forces worldwide. First flown in 1949, it was a single-seat, single-engine aircraft with swept wings, a duralumin frame, and an air inlet divided by a vertical partition. Armed with two 23mm cannons and one 37mm cannon, it could also carry bombs or external fuel tanks. Though relatively simple compared to newer Western jets, the MiG-17’s agility made it a formidable dogfighter. During the Vietnam War, the Vietnam People’s Air Force used the MiG-17 extensively against American aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II and F-105 Thunderchief, scoring significant victories and proving that manoeuvrability could still counter raw speed and power.
