History.

The Macchi C.202 Folgore was a highly regarded Italian fighter aircraft of World War II. Developed by Aeronautica Macchi and designed by Mario Castoldi, the C.202 first flew in August 1940 and entered service in 1941. It was an evolution of the earlier C.200 Saetta, featuring a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 601A engine, which was licensed-built by Alfa Romeo.

The Folgore, meaning "Thunderbolt," was known for its excellent maneuverability, speed, and handling characteristics, making it one of the best Italian fighters of the war. It was armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns and, in later versions, additional wing-mounted machine guns. The C.202 saw extensive action on various fronts, including North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the defense of Italy.

Despite its performance, the Folgore suffered from production delays and limited numbers. Approximately 1,150 units were built by the end of the war. The Macchi C.202 Folgore is remembered for its contribution to the Italian air efforts and its role in showcasing Italian aeronautical engineering prowess.
