U-Boot VIIB U-48 - Lego compatible COBI 4805 - 800 brick submarine
Built in Kiel during 1938 and 1939, U-48 was the most successful German U-Boat of World War II. Already in position in the North Atlantic when war was declared, she was able to operate immediately against Allied shipping and in two years of active service, sank 55 ships (321,000 tons) and damaged two more. By 1941, as the nature of the sea war was changing and widening, her range and torpedo capacity were becoming limited in the face of improving technology and she was reduced to a training vessel then laid up at Neustadt for two years and finally scuttled by her maintenance crew in early 1945.
