New COBI kits for June + Astonishing Facts about WW2

New COBI kits for June + Astonishing Facts about WW2

A very good day to you :)

It's the weekend again! Before I launch into some crazy facts about WWII,
I thought you would like to know one of our COBI orders was delivered this afternoon - any pre-orders should be despatched early next week - see below for which new kits have arrived. Also, there's another COBI order on the way which includes a pallet load of COBI-2574 Jagdpanthers. So if you've been counting down the days - it won't be long now! The majority of the sets have been pre-ordered though, so don't hang around if you want one soon.

In other news, this week COBI announced a couple of new sets due out in June - a 1:48 scale RAF Tyhoon FGR4 "Gina" (COBI-5843). And a new version of the soviet Bell P-39Q Airacobra aircraft (COBI-5747). We will keep you posted as more information about these sets becomes available next week.

We also heard from COBI that the Standard Edition RMS Titanic - COBI 1929 is coming back in July/August. There aren't any price details yet, but it appears to have 720 bricks instead of 722. If you want the current version (with 722 bricks!) before August then we have a few left in stock.

Now for some astonishing WW2 facts!

1. The Nazis planned to attack England using
40 million potato beetles.

Although Hitler decided against the use of biological weapons in WWII, the Nazis did consider unleashing an army of potato beetles instead. They planned to drop them on England to destroy its crops and cause widespread famine. Despite stockpilling the required number of insects by the end of the war, the plan was never executed.

2. U.S. Navy Command was once called CINCUS

Rather awkwardly, at the time Pearl Harbor happened, the U.S. Navy command was known as CINCUS, pronounced ‘sink us’. It was quickly changed to COMINCH in December 1941 (and its jurisdiction was expanded, as it was given command of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Asiatic Fleets in the process).

2. One soldier fought off 100 Japanese fighters

In May 1945, John R. McKinney was on guard duty in the Philippines when he was attacked by a large group of Japanese soldiers. He fought the men back for nearly 40 minutes using an M1 rifle, then hand-to-hand combat, over two waves of fighting. By the end, he had killed 38 of their troops. McKinney's courage on that day earned him a Medal of Honor (and a partially severed ear from the fighting).

4. Hitler's private train was named 'Amerika'

Adolf Hitler's Fuhrersonderzug (the Fuhrer's special train) was codenamed "Amerika". It was used as a mobile headquarters and was equipped with a conference car, escort car, dining car, two sleeping cars etc. It was an surprising choice of name for the official transport of Germany—which, apparently, the Nazis came to realise and by 1943, they had changed it to "Brandenburg".

5. One U.S. Division wore a 'Swastika' on their uniforms

The 45th Infantry for the U.S. Army used the 'Swastika' as their shoulder patch. It was actually a traditional Native American symbol of good luck - a pair of angled bars intersecting at the middle that looked like a Swastika. The design was proudly worn by the division's members for 15 years until the Nazis rose to power in Germany. By 1939, the group had swapped it for a Thunderbird design instead.

6. A midwife at Auschwitz delivered 3,000 babies

Stanisława Leszczyńska, a Polish mid-wife and prisoner of Aushwitz, took
it upon herself to deliver more than 3,000 babies during her time at the concentration camp. Of those babies, 2,500 did not survive past infancy, and just 30 of those are estimated to have survived by the time the camp was liberated. In 1970, Leszczyńska's work was celebrated as she was reunited with some female former prisoners and their children—whom she had helped deliver.
That's it for this week, let us know your favourite fact in the comments.

Have a great weekend!
