History.

Napoleon’s campaign in Russia reached its climax at the Battle of Moscow, often identified with the Battle of Borodino, fought on 7 September 1812. It was one of the bloodiest single-day battles of the Napoleonic Wars, with around 70,000 casualties. Napoleon’s Grande Armée clashed with Russian forces under General Kutuzov near the village of Borodino, just west of Moscow. Though the French claimed a tactical victory, the Russians withdrew in good order, preserving their army. Napoleon entered a largely abandoned and burning Moscow days later, hoping Tsar Alexander I would sue for peace. Instead, the Tsar refused, and with winter approaching, Napoleon’s army faced starvation, cold, and constant attacks during its disastrous retreat. The battle marked a turning point in his downfall.
