History.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter aircraft used during World War II. Designed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson and his team, it first flew in 1939. The P-38's distinctive twin-boom design and central nacelle housing the cockpit made it one of the most recognisable aircraft of the war. Initially developed to meet a 1937 United States Army Air Corps requirement for a high-altitude interceptor, the P-38 proved versatile, serving as a long-range fighter, bomber escort, and reconnaissance aircraft.

The Lightning excelled in the Pacific Theatre, where its long range and heavy firepower were critical in combating Japanese aircraft. It was also effective in the European Theatre, particularly in the hands of aces like Major Richard Bong, America’s highest-scoring fighter pilot. Over 10,000 P-38s were produced, with the aircraft remaining in service until the end of the war, contributing significantly to Allied victory.
