History.
The Leopard I A2A1 was an improved variant of the West German Leopard I main battle tank. Developed during the Cold War, it retained the Leopard I’s excellent mobility, low profile and powerful 105 mm L7A2 rifled gun. The A2 received a stronger cast turret, improved armour protection and upgraded sights compared with earlier Leopard I variants. The A2A1 designation referred to vehicles fitted with the PZB 200 low-light/night vision system, improving their ability to operate in darkness. Powered by an MTU MB 838 CaM 500 diesel engine, the tank could reach around 65 km/h on roads. The Leopard I A2A1 was designed primarily around mobility, firepower and reliability rather than heavy armour, making it well suited to the fast-moving armoured warfare tactics of the Cold War.
