History.

During the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815), French artillery played a vital role in Napoleon Bonaparte’s military success. French artillerymen were highly trained and formed a crucial part of the Grande Armée. Napoleon, himself a former artillery officer, placed great emphasis on mobility, coordination, and firepower. The French used the standardised Gribeauval system, which included 6- and 12-pounder field guns that were lighter and more manoeuvrable than earlier models. Artillery units supported infantry and cavalry by bombarding enemy lines and breaking formations. Crews worked in teams to load, aim, and fire their guns quickly and efficiently. Their effectiveness on the battlefield often proved decisive, contributing to France’s early dominance in Europe.
