History.
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was a long-range heavy bomber developed by the United States during the Second World War. Designed in the early 1940s, it represented a major technological leap, featuring a pressurised cabin, remote-controlled gun turrets, and very powerful Wright R-3350 engines. The aircraft was intended to strike Japanese targets from distant island bases in the Pacific. Entering service in 1944, the B-29 carried out devastating conventional bombing raids on Japanese cities and infrastructure. Most famously, it was the type used to deliver the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. After the war, the B-29 remained in service during the early Cold War and influenced later bomber designs worldwide.
