History
The A7V was Germany’s first operational tank, developed during the latter stages of the First World War in response to British and French armoured vehicles. Introduced in 1918, only 20 units were produced, making it a rare sight on the battlefield. The A7V was heavily armoured and mounted a 57mm gun along with multiple machine guns, but it was slow, mechanically unreliable, and struggled over rough terrain. Its most famous engagement occurred at the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, marking one of the first tank-versus-tank battles in history. Though limited in number and impact, the A7V represented a significant step in German armoured warfare development. Its design influenced post-war tank engineering and marked Germany’s early interest in mechanised warfare.
