History.

U-96 was a German Type VIIC U-boat commissioned during World War II, notable for its extensive service and depiction in popular culture. Launched on September 1, 1940, from the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, U-96 embarked on 11 patrols under the command of Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, achieving significant success against Allied shipping. The submarine's operational history includes the sinking of 27 ships, totaling over 180,000 tons of Allied shipping, making it one of the most effective U-boats of the Kriegsmarine.

U-96 gained further fame through Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel "Das Boot," which was later adapted into a critically acclaimed film and television series, dramatising the harrowing experiences of its crew. Despite its successful career, U-96 met its end in March 1945, when it was sunk by Allied bombs during an air raid while docked in Wilhelmshaven. The legacy of U-96 remains a poignant reminder of the brutal underwater warfare of WWII.
