History.

Roman warships played a pivotal role in the expansion and defence of the Roman Empire. Initially, the Romans were land-based fighters with little experience in naval warfare. However, during the First Punic War against Carthage in the 3rd century BCE, they recognised the need for a powerful navy. They quickly adapted, copying and improving upon the Carthaginian ships, most notably the quinquereme, a large vessel with five rows of oars.

Roman warships were typically equipped with a large bronze ram at the prow, designed to puncture the hulls of enemy vessels. The Romans also innovated by adding the corvus, a boarding device that allowed their soldiers to engage in hand-to-hand combat on enemy ships, effectively turning naval battles into mini-land battles. Over time, their navy became a dominant force in the Mediterranean, crucial in securing the empire’s vast maritime trade routes and protecting against piracy.
