History.

The Panzer III, or Panzerkampfwagen III, was a German medium tank developed in the 1930s for extensive use in World War II. Its official German designation was Sd.Kfz. 141. Originally intended for combatting other armoured vehicles and supporting the infantry-oriented Panzer IV, the Panzer III's role shifted due to the need for more potent anti-tank firepower against the formidable T-34. With a larger turret ring, the Panzer IV was redesigned to mount the long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun. As a result, the Panzer III adopted the role of infantry support, equipped with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun in its final version from 1942. Production of the Panzer III halted in 1943, but its capable chassis continued to serve as the basis for the Sturmgeschütz III assault gun until the war's end.
