History.
The Iowa-Class battleships, comprising USS Iowa (BB-61), USS New Jersey (BB-62), USS Missouri (BB-63), and USS Wisconsin (BB-64), were the last and most advanced battleships built by the United States Navy. Commissioned during World War II, these vessels were designed for speed, firepower, and armour, embodying the pinnacle of naval engineering. Each ship featured nine 16-inch guns capable of launching 2,700-pound shells over 20 miles, alongside numerous secondary and anti-aircraft weapons.
The Iowa-Class played significant roles in WWII, the Korean War, and the Gulf War, providing naval gunfire support, anti-aircraft defense, and surface warfare capabilities. Notably, the USS Missouri was the site of Japan's formal surrender in 1945, marking the end of World War II. Despite their advanced design, the advent of missile technology and changing naval warfare paradigms eventually rendered battleships obsolete, leading to their decommissioning in the 1990s. However, they remain celebrated symbols of American naval power and technological achievement.
