History.

The Dornier Do J Wal ‘Amundsen’ N-25 hydroplane, built by German engineer Claude Dornier, is a remarkable flying boat that played a pivotal role in early aviation history. Introduced in 1924, the aircraft was designed for versatility, with its robust, all-metal construction and twin-engine configuration making it ideal for challenging expeditions.

Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, celebrated as the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911, used the N-25 for his daring 1925 attempt to reach the North Pole by air. Alongside financier Lincoln Ellsworth and pilot Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen, Amundsen set out from Svalbard, reaching a record northern latitude of 87° 44′ before being forced to turn back.

The aircraft’s centenary in 2025 celebrates its engineering innovation and enduring legacy in exploration.
