History.
The Barkas B1000, a compact van produced in East Germany, became an iconic vehicle of the Deutsche Volkspolizei (People’s Police) during the mid-20th century. Manufactured from 1961 to 1990 by VEB Barkas-Werke in Chemnitz, this versatile vehicle was used for a variety of police duties, including patrols, prisoner transport, and emergency services.
The B1000 featured a three-cylinder, two-stroke engine, offering simplicity and reliability, though limited power. Its distinctive boxy design and practicality made it a familiar sight on East German streets.
Adorned in traditional green and white Polizei livery, the Barkas B1000 symbolised state authority in the German Democratic Republic. After reunification in 1990, many were retired, though some remain cherished classics today.
