Messerschmitt ME 262A Schwalbe - Lego compatible COBI 5543 - 315 brick fighter aircraft
The world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft (using Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet engines).
Although design work started on the ME 262 Schwalbe ('Swallow') in the 1930s, various problems kept it from operational use until mid-1944. But when it finally arrived it was a highly advanced and effective airborne weapon, faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter (including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor).
It has to be said that the Me 262's impact, due to late introduction and the small number of units produced, was not great. Germany's enemies countered its effectiveness by damaging it on the ground and during takeoff and landing and, because of its novelty, engine reliablity was a problem as was lack of fuel towards the end of the war.
After World War II, captured aircraft were studied and flown by the victors and came to influence such post-war aircraft designs as the North American F-86 Sabre and Boeing B-47 Stratojet. A small number were operated by the Czechoslovak Air Force until 1951.
