History.
The Lockheed P-38H Lightning, introduced in 1943, was a crucial variant of the iconic twin-boom fighter used by the United States during World War II. Equipped with upgraded 1,425-horsepower Allison V-1710-89/91 engines, the P-38H offered improved performance at high altitudes and enhanced firepower with its 20mm cannon and four .50 calibre machine guns. Despite cooling issues with its intercoolers, it was effective in both the European and Pacific theatres.
One notable pilot, Richard Bong, America’s top ace, flew a P-38H in several missions before switching to later variants. The aircraft was highly valued for its long range and versatility, excelling in bomber escort, ground attack, and reconnaissance roles. Though soon replaced by the P-38J with better engine cooling, the P-38H played a vital role in the air war, demonstrating the adaptability of the Lightning throughout the conflict.
