Italian single-engine single-seat World War II fighter aircraft used in 1943–1945. It was designed and built in Turin by Fiat and was regarded by the Luftwaffe as the best Axis fighter. Its operational service after the 8 September 1943 armistice was mostly under the Repubblica Sociale Italiana insignia and the aircraft proved itself a good interceptor and adversary in battle with British Spitfires and the american P-51 Mustangs, P-47 Thunderbolts and P-38 Lightnings. By the end of the war, 300 had been built.
