Displacing 72,800 tonnes and armed with nine 46 cm Type 94 guns, the largest ever mounted on a warship, Yamato was the heaviest and most powerful battleship ever constructed. Commissioned in late 1941, she served as flagship of the Combined Fleet, and it was from her bridge that the fleet was directed during the Battle of Midway in 1942. Yamato spent much of her career moving between the major Japanese naval bases of Truk and Kure in response to American threats. The only time her main guns were fired in anger was during the American invasion of the Philippines in 1944. She was sent to Okinawa in April 1945 in a last-ditch attempt  to stave off the US advance but was sunk en route on 7 April with the loss of most of her crew.
