German battleship of World War II, sister ship of Bismarck, was laid down at Wilhelmshaven in November 1936 and her hull was launched two and a half years later. By February 1941, all work was completed and she was commissioned into the German fleet. Like Bismarck, her main armament consisted of eight 15 inch guns in four twin turrets. Later modifications made her (at 42,900 tonnes full load) the heaviest battleship ever built by a European navy.
Eventually stationed in Norway as an interceptor of Allied convoys to the Soviet Union, Tirpitz tied up significant Royal Navy forces which had to be deployed to contain her. As with Bismarck, her actual combat operations were limited. There was only one offensive operation during which her main batteries were fired in anger: in September 1943 she and another battleship, Scharnhorst, bombarded Allied positions on Spitzbergen. Soon after this, she was damaged by British mini-submarines and then attacked from the air. She was sunk on 12 November 1944 by RAF Lancasters whose 12,000-pound 'Tallboy' bombs scored two direct hits. Subsequent fires spread to one of the main magazines and the ensuing massive explosion sent her very quickly down with heavy loss of life.
