The main anti-tank weapon of Wehrmacht Panzerjäger units until 1942, the Pak 36 was first issued to the army in 1936 and, by September 1939 over 9,000 pieces existed and 5,339 more produced during the war. Also a further 6,000 were exported and the design was copied by the Soviet Union and Japan. It was highly effective in the Spanish Civil War and in 1939, where it easily knocked out the light Polish tanks in the first campaign of World War II. In later campaigns in France and Russia the Pak 36 was less able to penetrate the heavier armour of the tanks it came up against and it was replaced from November 1941 by the 7.5 cm Pak 40. Production ceased entirely in early 1942.
