First World War biplane first produced in 1913. 10,000 were made before production finally ceased in 1932.  It was the first aeroplane to strafe enemy troops on the ground and, on 22nd August 1914, gained the distinction of being the first Allied aircraft to be shot down. On 21st of November 1914, three Avro 504Bs set out to bomb the Zeppelin factory at Friedrichshafen and scored several direct hits on the hangars and destroyed the Hydrogen plant. Although the 504 quickly became obsolete, its main role became was as a two-seat training aircraft with a universal mount to take different engines. A single-seat conversion with a wing-mounted Lewis gun was introduced in the winter of 1917/18 and used to equip Home Defence squadrons of the Royal Flying Corps
