Highly successful and reliable motorcycle and sidecar combination used by the German Wehrmacht in World War II. It was decided by the German military, after a period of evaluation, that the R75 should eventually be merged with its rival the Zündapp KS 750 and it was agreed to standardise parts for both machines until the hybrid (a BMW side-car grafted onto a Zündapp motorcycle) went into production. The hybrid, however, was never produced and production of the R75 stopped altogether in 1944 when the factory was badly damaged by allied bombers.
To this day the R75 is still in demand as a collector's item and many can still be used on an everyday basis by enthusiasts. The Soviet Union built its own version, the M-72, and a Chinese variant, the Yangtze River 750, has been in production since 1957. So reliable was the shaft-driven R75 during the war that Harley-Davidson produced the XA - virtually a duplicate of the R 75 - at the request of the US Army.
