Chieftain Main Battle Tank (Bovington Tank Museum) - COBI 2494 - 620 brick battle tank
The FV4201 Chieftain was the main battle tank of the United Kingdom during the 1960s,70s and 80s. It was quoted as the 'most formidable main battle tank in the world' at the time of its introduction in 1966 with the most powerful main gun and most effective armour of any tank yet made. This was further improved while in service with Chobham armour upgrades.
The Chieftain was a further development of the Centurion, introducing a supine driver position thus making possible a heavily sloped hull with reduced height. A new powerpack and improved transmission gave it higher speed than the Centurion although, due to upgrades in armour protection and armament, it was heavier. Its main armament was the L11A5 120 mm rifled gun with secondary armament of 2 7.62mm L7 machine guns. The Chieftain remained in service until replaced by the Challenger 1 which shared a large number of its features.
