The VW Type 166 Schwimmwagen (literally Floating/Swimming Car) was an amphibious four-wheel drive off-roader, used extensively by German ground forces during the Second World War. The Type 166 is the most numerous mass-produced amphibious car in history (14265 produced between 1942 and 1945). It was powered by a 4 cylinder boxer engine and could achieve speeds of 49mph on land and 6mph in water.
